What are the Dangers of Methylparaben?

We all have heard that Parabens are bad... Right???  ...Hopefully you have!

What is Methylparaben you ask?

Methylparaben is a Fungicide that is listed by the Hazardous Substances Data Bank as a food preservative, as well as a preservative for cosmetics.

 Breast Cancer

Methylparaben is widely used as a preservative in women's cosmetics, such as skin creams and deodorants. One of the physical dangers associated with Methylparaben is its connection with tumors in the breast. A report in the January-February 2004 issue of the Journal of Applied Toxicology states that when several breast tumors were examined by researchers, high levels of Methylparaben were found in the tissues.

Why is there concern?

Ingredients in a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products can
mimic the effects of the hormone estrogen. Scientists are concerned that even at low levels, these
environmental estrogens may work together with the body’s own estrogen to increase the risk of breast cancer.

What you can do now:

Learn the names of environmental estrogens
• Parabens
• Placental Extracts
• UV Screens (see below)

Read labels
• Ingredients are listed in decreasing order by weight on all personal care products

Make Choices
• Choose products that do not have environmental estrogens
